As an athlete, you just never know when your turn comes but key to note is to always be ready, such was the situation for Express FC goal minder Denis Otim on match day 15 away to Police FC.

The 20-year-old who had only made his first major club appearance in a goalless draw friendly game away to current Masaza champions Gomba FC on 28th February 2021 keeping a clean sheet in the process was informed he’d start in goal on match day after first choice Mathias Muwanga developed a stomach upset that morning while Chrispus Kusiima had a swollen toe, Otim says the call up didn’t shock him as he was always prepared, hoping to do more in the future.

“When I was informed about starting, I was calm because I’ve always prepared for this moment and had to grab it with both hands, I was so happy with my performance on the day. To help the team to our last away win in the first round is good but to keep a clean sheet on my debut is fantastic, I want to appreciate the technical team and our goalkeeper coach Daniel Kiwanuka for the trust and going forward as a team we’re going to use the first round break to correct our mistakes and bounce back better”.

Denis Otim who joined the Red Eagles at the start of this season from Mbarara City is no stranger to the big stage, in September 2019, a then 18 year old Otim put up a good performance in goal as he guided the U20 Hippos to a quarter final finish in the CECAFA U20 championships that were hosted by Uganda.
